Helping an aging parent plan a move

July 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Families often wait to discuss a move until something urgent happens. A fall, a health change, a maintenance problem, or a sudden caregiving need can compress every decision into a stressful few weeks.

When possible, begin sooner. The first conversation does not need to end with a listing agreement or a moving date. Its purpose is to understand what your parent wants, what is becoming difficult, and which options deserve a closer look.

Lead with questions, not conclusions.

Ask what feels easy about the current home and what feels harder than it used to. Ask what they would want to keep in their daily routine. Ask which relationships, activities, doctors, and familiar places matter most.

These questions protect autonomy. They also reveal whether the real concern is the house itself, isolation, transportation, maintenance, cost, health, or something else entirely.

Separate the decisions.

Families sometimes try to answer every question at once: where to move, when to sell, what to keep, how to pay for it, and who will manage the process. That can make even a willing person shut down.

Break the work into stages. Explore housing options before committing. Review finances with the right professional. Tour communities at a comfortable pace. Discuss what support would make the current home workable in the near term.

Build the team before the deadline.

A move may involve family, a real estate professional, an organizer, a mover, an estate-sale company, attorneys, financial advisors, and care professionals. Not every situation needs every resource, but identifying the right people early prevents rushed choices later.

My background in social work and gerontology taught me that practical plans work best when people feel heard. The goal is not to take control away from someone. It is to create enough support that they can make a good decision with confidence.
